The Values We Don't Budge On

The Values We Don't Budge On

We’ve always considered NZ Builders to be values driven.

We’ve always considered NZ Builders to be values driven. In the past, we had a set of values we did our best to embody every day on site, and this proved to be a point of difference for us with many of our clients, and it also contributed to a positive team culture. But we’ve grown a lot over the last few years, and were yet to take the time to reset, get clear on what was important, and ensure the team agreed with the things we would never budge on.

So, earlier this year, we brought the whole company together for a values workshop facilitated by high performance coach David Keelty. We met at Birkenhead United clubrooms, a club we’re proud to sponsor, and spent the day with David, who has a great way of challenging thinking, creating honest conversations, and turning ideas into clear, actionable behaviours. The final result was four simple values that reflect how we approach our work every day.

Value 1: Look After It

Respect sits at the centre of this value. It applies to our clients' homes, our projects, our tools, our team, and the NZ Builders brand itself.

Whether it's protecting a finished surface, maintaining a clean site, or representing the business professionally, "Look After It" is a reminder that everything we touch deserves care and attention.

Value 2: Sharp Pencils

High standards are a choice. They show in the planning, communication, workmanship, and final result.

"Sharp Pencils" reminds us to pay attention to the details, continually improve, and never settle for good enough. The standard you walk past becomes the standard you accept.

Value 3: Own The Job

Accountability matters. When challenges arise, we take responsibility and work towards a solution.
"Own The Job" reflects the mindset that if something falls within our scope, we take ownership of the outcome. No passing the buck, no loose ends, and no assumptions that someone else will sort it out.

Value 4: Sweep The Floor

Professionalism is often found in the small things: clean sites, clear communication, and thoughtful presentation.

"Sweep The Floor" is about removing the rough edges and taking pride in how we represent ourselves and our work. It's the finishing touches that often leave the biggest impression.

More Than Words

What makes these values meaningful is that they weren't created in a boardroom or handed down from management. Every one of these values was shaped and agreed upon by the whole team. In essence, the workshop actually just gave the team an opportunity to reflect on what NZ Builders already stands for and create a shared language around it.

The standards we hold ourselves to shape everything from how we communicate with clients to how we manage projects, maintain our sites, and support each other as a team. We’ve already seen a difference on site since this session, and we know they’ll provide the foundation for our culture as we continue to grow.
